Utah Rock Climbing Utah is famous for many things, Skiing, Mormons, The 2002 Olympics and of course, the breathtaking scenery and diverse natural geological formations found throughout the state. For those who live in Salt Lake City, rock climbing, hiking and mountain biking are always just around the corner. With world-class climbing found in Little Cottonwood Canyon and Big Cottonwood Canyon, the area is a hotspot for climbers from all over the world.
The Granite found in Little Cottonwood canyon is second only to Yosemite, and is always covered with climbers in the summer. The entire area is also packed with winter sports, most notably skiing and snowboarding, but also ice climbing, snow shoeing, and ice skating.

Many multipitch routes can be found throughout the state, including one of the largest rock faces in America, Notch Peak, which is over 2,500 feet tall. Easier climbs exist near Salt Lake, like the West Slabs, an 11 pitch climb that barely rates at 5.4-5.5. Zion is famous for it's massive sandstone walls. Arches National Park has a few interesting climbs, but just outside along Potash Road, you will encounter many classic sandstone cracks that are famous throughout Europe.

There are many bouldering crags in Little Cottonwood Canyon, and for those who love the sport, a quick morning problem or two on the granite blocks can really enhance your day.

Limestone quarries are also abundant, some of the best include Hellgate Cliffs, Deseret Peak area and the Notch Peak area near Delta. The Ibex Crag area is also being developed and looks to be one of the better areas for solitary climbing in the entire country.

In Big Cottonwood Canyon in Salt Lake City, there are thousands of potential quartzite climbing areas. From the "S-Curve", you will see Wall Street, which is one of the most popular with many multi-pitch 5.10 routes and difficult overhangs like "Dog eat Dog" that boast difficulties of 5.13b, some of the hardest in the state. From this area, you have dozens of options including classic hikes to Sundial Peak, or even Broads Fork Twin Peaks, some of the most beautiful places in Utah.
